Counselling is a place to talk about what is happening in your life in a non-judgemental and accepting space. It is often about healing the past while moving into a present and future that is more fulfilling.
Many people ask how to know if they should see a counsellor; these people often are doing a good job at coping with their lives and appearing to the outside world like they are thriving. Internally it is sometimes a different story, and counselling can offer the opportunity to deal with day-to-day concerns such as depression, stress, time management, and relationships before small concerns can turn into major hurdles.
Counselling can also help with the major hurdles of life such as post traumatic stress disorder, grief and loss, major depression, personality disorders, anxiety disorders, and self injury among others.
There are many different types of therapy which will have varying degrees of success for different people. This is why many good therapists will tailor their approach for each of their clients and know a variety of therapeutic interventions that they will be able to employ depending on a variety of factors. If you have a specific type of therapy that you are interested in, then make sure to bring this up with your therapist. Your therapist may have training in this area and be able to use those skills with you in your next session, it may encourage your therapist to take further training in this area, or they may be able to refer you to someone who will be able to do that style of therapy with you.
